While it works well to play CDs, it lacks basic features that I thought were standard on CD players now. So you can't jump to track 5 instantly, you have to use the |>| keys to change the track.
About the only thing really nice about this model is the dimensions. The unit also doesn't remember the track # and position that was last playing when you shut it off, a useful feature of my last CD player.
I had a similar Pioneer magazine type CD player way back in the early 90s. The unit does not accept number inputs even off of a Pioneer receiver remote.
The magazine design fits in my cabinet where the carousel type players are too deep. This one is so similar I have to wonder if Pioneer has upgrade their old model at all.
You cannot play a certain track directly.
Lucky for me this all developed during Vann's post-delivery trial period. Big mistake. It couldn't seem to "see" the first two or three tracks of brand new commercial CDs and output distortion, static and helicopter noises instead of music. I looked around for a replacement and headed straight back to Pioneer.
Everything about it shouts cheapness. I just told my local repair shop I will do almost anything to keep the old unit "alive." They tell me all it needs is a simple clean and lube job and it's good to go. Sad to say, Pioneer was once the industry leader for all forms of disc players. Now they have little to offer. Since 1989 I've put many thousands of hours of play time on a Pioneer Elite PD-M910 6-Disc Magazine CD player. The unit is a true workhorse. It does not offer TOS-link digital output, only RCA jacks. Something immediately began to go wrong with the laser pickup.
Where have they gone.The unit I received suffered the same defect as many others reviewed here. The good folks there cheerfully sent me a return shipping label, took the unit back, and refunded all of my money. I guess this is just another indication that the era of the Compact Disc really is coming to an end. Seems they can no longer get that model from Pioneer. It does not come with a Single-Disc magazine, only the 6-pack, which makes playing a single disc very inconvenient. They would like to send me another PD-M426, but that's not happening.
Alas, it is now beginning to show its age. It couldn't play CD-R discs at all, though the old PD-M910 plays them just fine. The 910 had these features 20 years ago. The PD-M426 is now Pioneer's only 6-pack player, and it's anything but Elite. Programability is all but completely lacking.
Works great for someone who does not need a home theater system.just a nice CD player for the bedroom or office space. Not much is different with the new one. I would highly recommend. I have had a Pioneer 6-disc magazine CD player for 12-13 years without any problems. When the carousel in our Sony CD/tape player quit working, I only wanted to replace it with the Pioneer, a proven product.
I would buy it all over again. The CD player I bought is like the one in my Truck. And it work's just as good as that one.
However, two times (starting a decent time after purchase) indicate a manufacture engineering defect. The great convenience of this machine is that it takes up about half the space of the carousel type. Given my space limitations, I tried a second one because of this. I've had two of these. I would advise against purchase. It blurbs through. Each eventually developed the same problem--the servo that moves the laser reader across the disc loses its ability to scan/play the first few minute or so of any CD. This forces me to be nearby to fast-forward past the servo's difficulty.
